We have turned the corner and come into the home stretch. The semester is nearly over. Finals are next week. We have scheduled individual one-on-one meetings to talk about your favorite Korean proverb(s).
Proverbs
Proverbs and Sayings show truths and principles that we live by. Our fables and childhood stories also show these values. They are the roots of our culture. Sometimes these roots are very deep. They are so deep that we don't realize that they are values that may be different in other cultures. These values, truths, principles, and viewpoints seem to be simply Reality.
But other cultures may have differences. We can find evidence of the differences in the proverbs, sayings, and fables that we learned in childhood. Most cultures will have similar sayings and similar stories. If we listen carefully, we can hear the small differences.
If we think about these differences, we can see that other people live in a slightly different Reality.
That is the amazing point! Our Realities can sometimes be radically different. How can Reality be different?
Final Exam Preparation
Everyone needs some help preparing. Just send your script to me by email and I will work on it and send it back. You can send it back to me two or three times. No Problem.
If you feel that you don't have enough to say, please try answering some questions. Anyone who listens to your favorite Proverb will have questions. You can make your presentation bigger by answering some questions.
When did you first hear this proverb? Who was there? Did you understand it the first time? What did it mean? Has the meaning changed for you? You have heard the proverb many times since then. Who said it then? What was the situation? What did they mean? Was the meaning different? Why do you like it (or hate it)? When (in what situation) do you use this proverb? Does your mother or father use this proverb? Do your friends? Do you know a similar proverb in English? In Korean? In Chinese or Japanese? Is there a difference?
